Nucleus

The Control Center

The nucleus is often called the control center of the cell. This is because the nucleus holds the very important molecule of DNA. DNA (deoxyribose nucleic acid) is a molecule made up of nucleotides which contain a sugar, phosphate, and base. These nucleotides are like little individual puzzle pieces that make up a code which gives the cell the instructions to make proteins. Obviously, this code needs to be protected because each cell only has one copy of DNA. The nucleus is surrounded by two membranes and the primary function is to hold and protect the DNA.
